Bioethics is the study of controversial ethical issues fostered by the advances made in biology and medicine. It concerns human and animal life, as well as environmental rights. By asking questions about right and wrong responsibly and how to respond to moral questions, bioethics combines politics, law, medicine, religion, philosophy, technology and science, asking for a larger view of right and wrong. This club’s purpose is to create a forum in which members can analyze and engage in lively discussion and debate on bioethical topics of interest to its members in a non-competitive environment.. We aim to contribute both discourse and awareness of critical frameworks in multiple fields of study in an environment that brings them together. Specifically, the club intends to facilitate discussion from a variety of diverse ethical, cultural, and personal backgrounds by discussing or debating topics from the point of view of a manufactured identity with a unique set of personal experiences, forcing participants to examine difficult ethical issues in novel ways they might otherwise never consider. We hope to bring people together on the basis of conversations surrounding the future of diverse fields and how analyzing these differing perspectives can help find middle ground on a myriad of issues.

The purpose of “Bridge Stony Brook” aims to develop and foster an environment of productive civil dialogue. Bridge Stony Brook is a nonpartisan platform that intends to educate and respect a variety of unique political views. This club is dedicated to bringing together students of diverse viewpoints to talk about the current issues of our time in a productive and empathetic way. We do this by creating spaces where students can discuss their ideas and learn about their ideological opponents’ experiences and knowledge that informs their beliefs. We talk about anything ranging from immigration to guns to economics, providing balanced background information so that participants can begin each discussion with a common understanding. The significance of the name Bridge is that it represents our philosophy; we are not here to force people into the middle or to determine a winner, but to learn about differing perspectives while still being able to hold your own beliefs. The three main values of Bridge Stony Brook are viewpoint diversity, constructive dialogue, and solution-oriented politics. Viewpoint diversity is having the space for constructive and open dialogue as well as having productive intellectual exchanges. At Bridge Stony Brook we understand that it is not possible to challenge certain beliefs with only one view of ideas, rather is it a range of perspectives. Constructive dialogue is crucial to the Bridge mission. Bridge Stony Brook is adamant about transforming unproductive and disrespectful conversations about politics into engaging, fulfilling, and informative ones. At Bridge Stony Brook we believe it takes courage to challenge opposing beliefs but it also takes respect, empathy, and curiosity to explore the complexity of important issues in a productive manner.
