The AAPI Mentorship Network @ SBU was established to connect Stony Brook University's Asian, Asian American, and Pacific Islander students to faculty and staff mentors. Mentors are committed to helping this student body excel in a variety of areas, including academic skills, confidence and leadership skills, work/study-life balance, social and racial justice, service and community work, teamwork and people skills, career planning and networking, and research and scholarship skills. Student mentees can benefit from the unique expertise of the mentor they're working with especially if they take the initiative. The AAPI Mentorship Network @ SBU was started by a group of faculty whose goal was to uplift the diversity of our academic community, and to help AAPI students thrive at SBU and feel a genuine sense of belonging on Long Island and surrounding areas. By building a robust support network and a community, we aim to help AAPI students reach their educational and life goals.

Many of our students, including those who participate in the English Honors Program, work closely with faculty mentors to pursue independent research projects, which have led to student publications and conference presentations. The outstanding English Teacher Education Program attracts some of the strongest of our majors. Our teacher certification candidates experience a wide range of diverse field experiences through relationships built with local school districts as well as the proximity of our program to NYC schools. In addition to obtaining substantial non-economic benefits, graduates with an M.A. in English earn more money per year and over a lifetime than do those with bachelor's degrees alone. Masters students develop clear writing, high-level reading skills, and imaginative thinking —transferable skills sought by employers in a range of fields. Many of our M.A. students who want to pursue a career in academia go on to distinguished doctoral programs. And at Stony Brook, the doctoral program offers students not only deep training in literary and cultural studies but the option to pursue additional graduate certificates in Teaching Writing; Women's, Gender, & Sexuality Studies; or Media, Art, Culture, and Technology, among others. We are proud to say that our doctoral students hold tenure-track and tenured positions from New York to Idaho to Pennsylvania to South Carolina.

Committed to a pluralist treatment of philosophical issues, the department encourages interdisciplinary study as well as more traditional approaches to philosophy. Convinced that a knowledge of the history of philosophy is essential to the philosophical enterprise, the department offers intensive courses in ancient, medieval, and modern thought. Other courses address specific philosophical problems in ethics, political theory, epistemology, aesthetics, environmental philosophy, feminism, critical race theory, and philosophy of technology. The department is internationally renowned for its concentration in Continental philosophy, with particular emphasis on contemporary French and German thought. Courses in phenomenology, psychoanalysis, structuralism, poststructuralism and postmodernism, and critical theory are held regularly, focusing on such figures as Husserl, Merleau-Ponty, Derrida, Kristeva, Freud, Lacan, Irigaray, Levinas, and Habermas. Crucial nineteenth century philosophers such as Hegel and Nietzsche are also treated in depth. As well, the department offers many international research opportunities to graduate students who wish to pursue the study of Continental philosophy in Europe.Stony Brook maintains a lively dialogue with Anglo-American philosophy, which is also strongly represented among faculty. A comparative seminar in a topic of common concern to continental and analytic philosophy is given each year. Other analytic courses cover computational theory, questions of meaning and metaphor, issues in philosophical psychology, and special problems in philosophical logic. Stony Brook's Department of Philosophy is a member of the New York Consortium of Graduate Schools, which allows graduate students to take courses for credit at schools in the New York City area, including Rutgers, Princeton, New York University, and Columbia.___________________________________Contact InformationAddress:Harriman Hall 213Department of PhilosophyStony Brook, NY 11794-3750USAPhone Number: (631) 632-7590

The goal of the Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP) is to promote academic excellence and to provide support services for its participants. This New York State Education Department effort encourages and prepares economically disadvantaged Stony Brook University students for entry into scientific, technical, health, and health related professions, including many areas where licensure is required. In addition to study groups, the program offers preparation for professional school exams, academic/career advisement, a pre-freshman summer residential program for credit and academic enrichment, as well as research/internship placements. The philosophy of CSTEP is to promote student involvement in designing the focus of the program and, through collaboration with CSTEP and University faculty and staff, help students achieve their full academic potential. *NOTE* This page is for the Department of Society and Technology CSTEP program, not the campus-based student-run CSTEP Club. The student run club on Stony Brook campus, CSTEP Club, was created by CSTEP students to supplement the NYSED funded CSTEP organization by serving as the "social arm" of the organization. CSTEP Club does not require acceptance into the NYSED funded CSTEP Organization to participate.

The Sociology Department at Stony Brook was founded in the 1960s and rapidly became an internationally visible center of innovative education and ground-breaking research. Hanan Selvin was responsible for starting the graduate program and for recruiting the nucleus of an eminent department, including such luminaries as Eugene Weinstein, John Gagnon, Rose Coser and Lewis Coser. Not only did these department members in turn recruit other outstanding sociologists, but all of them, in particular the Cosers, established a tradition of cooperation through the creation of informal events, like reading groups, that fostered an atmosphere of departmental cordiality.

The Department of Sociology at Stony Brook University is a vibrant community of students and scholars exploring how people, power, and culture shape our world. We study social life, social change, and the causes and consequences of human behavior from a global perspective. Through research, collaboration, and community engagement, our students learn to think critically, act compassionately, and create meaningful change. Whether through local partnerships or global inquiry, we connect sociology in action; linking research to real-world impact. At Stony Brook Sociology, we dare to be engaged and kind — using knowledge to build understanding and stronger communities.

WRITE | RESEARCH | SUCCEED The Department of Writing and Rhetoric believes that writing is an ongoing process of discovery, synthesis, and analysis, as well as a finished product of communication. We teach and reinforce the habits of mind and behaviors of successful writers. We endorse and practice collaborative learning through our small workshop classes of no more than twenty-five students, where we foster an environment of critical dialogue and extensive feedback and support. In the writing classroom students compose in nearly every session and all other work, such as reading assignments, discussion, and so on, explicitly supports the act of writing. A workshop environment means that students work with one another: planning, writing, synthesizing, analyzing, evaluating, designing, revising, rewriting, editing, reading, rereading, and publishing. We believe that no matter what major you choose or career path you take, writing will play a vital role in your success. The DWR will accompany you throughout your career at Stony Brook, from admission to graduation. We are a community of writers, and we offer the minor that goes with every major!

History is the systematic study of peoples, states, and societies from antiquity to our current times. Using both written records and material artifacts, historians attempt to reconstruct and interpret change over time in every facet of human experience, from political and economic systems to family life and gender roles, to name a few. The study of history is not only intrinsically interesting, but also contributes useful insights into the contemporary world and its problems.

The Department of History at Stony Brook University is dedicated to exploring the past in ways that deepen understanding of the present and prepare students to engage thoughtfully with the world. As part of a leading public research university within the State University of New York system, the department brings together scholars and students who examine historical change across cultures, societies, and time periods.

Our faculty are internationally recognized researchers and educators whose work spans global regions and diverse fields of study. Through innovative scholarship and engaged teaching, the department encourages students to think critically, analyze historical evidence, and communicate ideas clearly.

Since 1987 The Humanities Institute at Stony Brook has been supporting and showcasing the work of those who explore the nature of human experience, whether through academic research or artistic expression. Such exploration may be philosophical, philological, historical, musical, literary, theatrical, cinematic, political or scientific, or something in between and amongst many such domains, but they all aim to take part in an ongoing dialogue about who and what we are; how and why we make shared knowledge; who might be included and excluded from it; and what we ought, and ought not, to do with it. The Institute is a place for us all to take part in these dialogues as a community.

The humanities have a long history of producing new and preserving old knowledge through scholarly research within its disciplinary branches. The humanities also unite those specialized disciplines with the overall mission of the university – and with the broad public interest – by cultivating critical thinking, cultural awareness, a sense of historical responsibility, and a theory and practice of democratic citizenship. The Humanities Institute at Stony Brook is a place to find some of the best research, theory, criticism, and art that the humanities has to offer.

Some make a gift or pledge in response to a letter from a peer or one of our deans, others respond to a telephone call from one of our outstanding Stony Brook students, while others choose to make a gift online.Annual gifts can be for discretionary use (i.e., a gift without restrictions) or designated to support a specific University program, including key initiatives of the President, a particular college or school, a center or institute, or a specific department, program or existing fund. Annual gifts provide the University's leadership with the type of flexible resources necessary to fund innovative programs, address urgent needs, and ensure a level of quality and excellence not funded by state appropriations or tuition revenues.

The Ombudsman is an impartial and independent resource for any individual within the university community seeking assistance or information in pursuit of the resolution of a concern or problem related to their life or work at the university. Speaking with the Ombudsman will increase your awareness of alternatives available to you for resolving work or academic related concerns. The Ombudsman Office always strives to enhance an individual's capabilities to deal effectively with situations on their own. If further assistance is requested, additional information can be gathered on your behalf and referrals can be made to other resources and support services. As a designated neutral, the Ombudsman will listen to all sides of an issue, and may advise, refer, offer informal mediation, provide shuttle diplomacy, coach, counsel or negotiate to assist in developing satisfactory resolutions. You, in consultation with the Ombudsman, decide which course of action is acceptable. Serving as a designated third-party or neutral, the Ombudsman is neither an advocate for any individual or point of view, but rather as an advocate for fair process and equity. In considering any given concern or inquiry, the Ombudsman strives to consider the rights and interests of all parties to facilitate positive resolution of conflicts and concerns. The Ombudsman Office functions independent of all other administrative and academic structures within the University. The office does not replace, but supplements other existing formal complaint handling resources. The goal of the office is to help the campus community manage conflict constructively and cooperatively, and to support positive change. Managing conflict constructively stimulates innovation and growth. The Ombudsman Office provides a versatile set of tools to enable visitors to resolve individual problems as they arise, de-escalate conflicts and minimize negative consequences for the institution, and identify broader systemic concerns and strategies for addressing them constructively. At its most basic level, the Ombudsman Office is the safe place to come to share your concerns, gather accurate and relevant information, and explore options and strategies for resolution.
